White of Sunderland Valve Amp

Postby Soulman on Wed Jul 21, 2010 8:09 pm

Just been given a Whites of Sunderland Valve Amp, i am trying to do a bit of research about it, it has Mullard EL34 valves (which i assume are the originals) and has a seriel number 12 which is very low so i assume must be one of the first amps sold. I know it has not been played in anger since the late 1970s and has one of those old style round plug sockets although the lead is missing.

I was just really wondering if some can give me some idea about it. I am inclined to remove the valves and place them in my music (Icon Audio Stereo 40 Mark 3) valve amp

Thanks a lot

There are two family trees of white amps. The first is the white amp modeled after the orange and matamp heads of the day. The second, which I suspect is yours because of the sunderland connection is the "little rock" brand of amps. These amps were tweed cloth covered heads and combos with cascading volumes, a boost channel, bright switching, and reverb. These are loosely modeled after boogies and do sound great...I just sold an el84 version but still have a el34 version. Pics would help..or at least describe the controls. I would not rob it of tubes just yet....figure out what it is first.

From your description Soulman, yours sounds like a very early original White, which would have most likely been built by Matamp in Yorkshire for Bill White's Sunderland shop. It is most likely a W100 model (100 watt), which is basically a Matamp GT120 with different exterior cosmetics. With the serial number of 12 it would be a circa 1970 amp.
I have two of these early Matamp built White amps and they are terrific, great design and excellent construction.
I would find a Bulgin plug lead for it and do your best to get it working.
+1 on leaving the Mullard valves in there too; they most likely are original to the amp.

If you could post some pictures or links to them that would be really helpful in ID-ing exactly what you have... :)

Thanks for the replies, i'm not good with modern technology so i hope the links work to pics i have taken

I took the valves out as i don't play the guitar

The lady who gave me knows i like valves and she was going to give it to a charity shop so she gave me it

She told me that it had been in garage since about 1979 but it spent most of the 1970s attached to her other halfs 64 fender strat

Heres some pics

Awkwardsilence wins the prize...it is indeed a orange/matamp amp circa 1970...and a very clean example as well! Great amp....put the good tubes back in it, set it on top of a nice 4x12 cabinet and prepare to be amazed. If you don't like it, there are score on this board who would take it off your hands!

'tis true, they're awesome amps. I've got two of them as well. It's rumored there are in the neighborhood of 300 of them in existence. It's not worth a fortune, because people don't really know them that well, but they are great sounding amps. If you play through it for a few hours, you'll never let it go.... 8)

I'm afraid I beat you to it. I bought the amp (minus valves) a few weeks back.
It hadn't been used for years and needed some work but is running nicely now.

Actually, Mr. C, I'm hanging onto this amp but might sell one of my others (I have more than one of these W100s and I'm thinning down my amp collection at the moment). PM me if interested...

I also bought a White amp, the EL84 model , sounds great when working but can`t find a tech that will repair it without circuit diagram :(
Anyone know where i can get one ?
Mine has 4 ecc83`s and an ecc81 preamp section and 4 EL84`s power amp section.
Amp itself is in good nick apart from a couple of blown resistors.
