RARE Laney VA 100 valve head?

Postby moritz on Wed Dec 22, 2004 9:52 am

Hi all, i'm new here...
I recently purchased a Laney VA 100 (100 watt) valve head but have had a hard time finding info on this rare beast. :(

It's the same amp covered in the "crazy laney" thread and you can see pics of it here.

The amp has a hand-written sticker on the back that reads "21/8/85", so i guess this baby was made back in '85. Tubes are 4 12AX7 and 4 EL34 (which i think are RFT's), and it features what appear to be partridge trannies. The front panel reads, from right to left:
2X inputs ("normal" and "cut")
Gain 1 (dirty)
Gain 2 (clean)
Bass
Treble
Middle
Presence
"Top" switch (basically a treble boost)
Master volume
Stand-by switch
Power switch

Also, none of the knobs are of the pull variety as found in the AOR's. The back has an input voltage selector, a couple of fuses, slave in, slave out, and 2 speaker outs with 4/8/16 ohm selector switch.

I contacted Laney for info, and they referred me to MAJ electronics, who have taken over the service/technical support for older model Laneys. I recently heard from MAJ; they searched their archives, but were unable to find anything on this model. They did say, however, that it was only made for a short time, being quickly superseded by the AOR/Protube models, and all that can be remembered is that it was just a standard valve design, similar to the Protubes, output stages probably identical to the later models.

Anyway, i've searched the net far and wide and have not been able to turn up anything, so please, if anyone has any info on this amp what-so-ever, i'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well i don't exactly have a cab to run it through, so for now i've wired it up to a bunch of old stereo speakers... not exactly the most ideal setup, but it works for now, until i get a cab.

Having never heard an AOR, i can't really compare the two, however it has a nice and clean yet warm tone and is quite transparent -i can totally hear the differences between my guitars, which i couldn't so much with my last amp. Overdrive wise, i can't really give you a comprehensive description as i'm reluctant to push it too hard until i get a proper cab, but from what i can tell, it sounds more 'old school' than 'modern high gain'.

Again, if anyone knows anything about this amp, that'd be great. I think my best bet may be to ask Lyndon Laney himself... :p

i bought a VA 100 about 15 years ago - never had any trouble with it, no blown fuses or tubes etc till a few months ago when two of the 2N4007 diodes died (right below the EL34s) - fixed it for USD 1.50
very clear sound, very loud, very reliable
it came from a bass player, and i used it for my strat copy, with a 4x12'' laney cabinet
i made a schematic (handdrawn - not pretty but complete!) - if you're interested let me know
no idea how old mine is though, guess about 25 years now (was supposedly 10 years old when i bought it, do the math!)

I've seen that this is already an old post, but I've been looking around for more info. I have the combo version of this amp, still loaded with it's original valves (the EL34's are Radiotrons). As mine is equipped with a reverb unit, 2 extra 12AX7 valves are added. It has two 12" speakers, but I've seen a picture of a combo version with 4 10" speakers. A few months ago, a Laney VA 50 with reverb was sold on a French website. I'll post a picture as soon as possible.

The previous owner told me he bought it back in 1978, when he was about 16-17 years old. I've seen a bassamp has the same looks but is a little bit smaller.

Mischief1, would you mind sending me your schematic? I'll try to redraw it in Eagle.

I´d really like to have any kind of schematics for this gem. My amp has 6L6 valves and a pair of Mckenzie speakers.

hi there,

i'm in this forum only once a year so i'm sorry about the late reply ... (Witloofboer etc)

if you need more infos about my 'VA100 research' send me a private message (not a post!) with your email address and i'll get back to you!

still got my VA100 ... since 1989 or 1990 ... still sounds great, no further problems, but i guess i should change the caps ASAP

l8r

PS i have the non-reverb and no pedal but i have pedal inputs and some tracelines on the PCB for more components

I also have a head and a combo, big pics up on my blog, no schem though: https://ampstack.wordpress.com/2016/10/ ... a50-combo/

They seem to have some Pro series Burman influences.
