Bass Players That Have Their Own Voice

Safe haven for everything low-frequency. Bass players unite in this forum.

I was going to say Lemmy, Mick Karn and JJ Brunel. Here's another one, maybe not familiar Stateside; Pino Palladino. Before he played with Paul Young, he did this excellent (and distinctive, fretless Musicman) bassline for Gary Numan's "Music for Chameleons":

that was also brilliantly air-guitared by comedian Steve Coogan as the cringeworthy, failed DJ, Alan Partridge:

Agree with a lot of names mentioned. Would add John Paul Jones for rock and Ray Brown for jazz.

Oh yeah! +1 for sure!

+2. He's the reason I play bass, and the inspiration for my sound.

Cheers!

steve jones of the sex pistols.

sure sid vicious had the name, but he didn't actually play on any of the records. glen matlock was a good player, and unless you have any of the demoes they recorded or live bootlegs, it's basically just steve jones on most of the recordings, particularly never mind the bollocks.

i always thought there was something tight about the guitarist playing bass on recordings. didn't eddie cochran and les paul do it too? billy corgan is said to have done it. hell, i've done it!

Don't forget PETE HOOK..

Joy Division, New Order and Monaco.

Gorgeous Bass Tone and inspired usage I believe of a Clone Theory Pedal.
Sadly, a former Marshall and Vox owner/user, however now just about "Rig-less".. but, I do still own a very naughty 1964 HOFNER VERITHIN.. and that's just about it !

I've yet to see any bass player do frantic lines like his and sing at the same time,he's one of my main influences and I've been lucky enough to have shared a couple bills with his solo act MR.Wrong,he's a genius writer to top it all off.

Check out Chris Squire. Self taught bassist, sang in church choir as a lad. The guy blows my mind playing intricate runs while singing complex harmonies. 8)

I am slightly stunned no one has mentioned Mr Geddy Lee. So I will. :)

Gotta agree about Mr Lee...

How about Mark Andes in his Spirit days, 4 excellent albums of peaking with Sardonicus...

or even the late Berry Oakley - anyone listened past Duane Allman and Dickey Betts on Fillmore East... Doom-do-ba-do-ba-doom-do-ba-do-ba-doom-do-ba-do-ba-doom-doom... etc tied to that post, ripping out those chunks from that Jazz...

and how can you have forgotten Stanley Clarke...!
Oh ohh, where does the time go...?
