They did use solid state Vox's on Beggars Banquet and probably a little bit of Let It Bleed. Watch the sessions for Sympathy, look at pics from 1968 - early 1969! :D

And what you describe, as has just been pointed out, is for jumpin' jack flash/street fighting man.

IMHO the sympathy lead break sounds like a "treble booster" would be the key ingredient in that stew ....

p

The Vox amps have treble boosts. ;)

No they have top boost. Treble boosters and top boost are two totally different things.

Here's my 2001 Gibson R-7 les paul custom in to the Normal channel of a 1967 Vox Supreme.

http://www.esnips.com/doc/042e3eec-f0de ... ox-Supreme

volume at 10, bass at 2, treble at 10 with the top boost engaged.

The recording doesn't quite capture the piercing treble or how loud the amp was!!

So, imo, the lead guitar was done with his 3 pickup les paul custom in to a 1967 Vox Supreme.

This is based on the fact that the amp is seen and heard in the one plus one film which features the recording of the song and the vox supreme amp gets close enough without any eq etc.

Wow, I've really got to expand my tone-tweaking experimentation and get more experience. That does not sound like a Les Paul to me.

My first guess would have been a Strat into a Vox with a (possibly tweaked) Rangemaster. Maybe a Tele.

Great solo though. The phrasing is phenomenal, and it's mixed so perfectly for the song...very dry and in-your-face, sitting on top of the rest of the mix. A bold move, but it just fits.

Does anyone recall what he played in the movie "Gimme Shelter"? (also immortalized by some critics as the most famous snuff film of all time). Remember Marty Balin (Airplane) getting knocked out cold by an Angel? Keith reportedly went to walk off the stage later in protest of the chaos, and was forced back on at gunpoint by another Hell's Angel!

Uh... has anyone tried just stepping on a wah pedal? Don't use it - just engage it. HUGE treble boost.

Sorry folks, I'm guilty for getting this thing back up a few times, but the beggars banquet era tones have been my personal obsession/holy grail for years.

Is that your Vox Supreme myspace page? That amp sounds just lovely and must get one now. I bet the are outrageously expensive.
Boutique solder, directional cables aligned with global magnetic leylines, radionic mind-control boutique guitar pedals hooked into the HAARP arrays, rare-gas filled 4x12 cabs, guitar picks fashioned from the Roswell UFO crash debris and so on.
