Larger EL84 valve than normal...???

How can you get a great tone without a good understanding of what makes your amp tick? — EL34, EL84, 6L6, KT66, KT88, 12AX7, 12AT7, 12AU7, EF86, Output Transformers, Power Transformers, Capacitors, Resistors and everything else that it takes to make a tube amp sing!

Larger EL84 valve than normal...???

Postby Ecc83 on Sat Aug 05, 2017 1:37 pm

Hi guys,

I bought a vintage EL84 Mazda valve from ebay last week.

It is marked in white:

Mazda
Valve
EL84
Foreign
BVA

On the base it is marked '13' and what looks like a large upsidedown 'U'.

The bottle is much bigger than a normal EL84. The wire valve holder won't fit over it, for instance.

The sound is fantastic. I have it in a Vox AC4TV and I can't really get it to distort too much at all - I know!

Huge headroom with this valve. Really bright punchy sound. Great sound.

I can't find any info on the web about a similar, physically larger than normal EL84 valve like this anywhere. Can you help?

Cheers,

Michael.

Detailed pictures would certainly help...

Any chance the "upside down U" is a lower case "n"? That was Matsushita's code, which could align with the Mazda label.

...Hey! I played that song when it was new...

My partner who has better eyes than me says the markings at the bottom of the tubes where the pins are is:

a larger 'u' shape:

Then underneath that U is smaller symbols:

a backwards '7' shape and a '1'

I can't get resolution on my phone for a picture of the bottom of the vale.

Yep, Unit_1, many of the Mazdas were made by Mullard... :)

This one isn't a Mullard though because it is screen printed 'Foreign' and because of the raised glass markings on the underside of the tube, (The U shape and reversed 7 and a 1) which is not typical of a Mullard valve... it's someone else, I just don't know who yet....

I keep getting 'Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.' when trying to upload a 107kb image of the valves - anyone any idea of why?

Nobody's allowed to upload images directly to this messageboard (they haven't got the server space for everybody's pics). Instead, you'll need to upload your image to some webspace (or open an account with a picture-hosting service such as http://imgur.com/). Then when you're posting on here, you put the URL of your image between image tags, like this made-up example:

Code: Select all
[img]http://www.imagehostingservice.com/addressofmyimageblahblah[/img]

If you do that, the image will then show up in your post. DON'T simply put the image URL in without wrapping it in image tags, 'cos that will just show up as a web address, not a picture.

Hope that helps,
Ken

Actually, I received some help/advice - and it seems like the markings on this tube could after all indicate that it could be a Mullard...
