Gibson Titan GA-14 Hum

Postby IanInIT on Thu Jul 13, 2017 1:13 pm

I recently discovered a Gibson Titan GA-14 in my father-in-law's basement. It was his father's and has pretty much been sitting there for probably at least 30 years. It is in beautiful condition. He let me take it home. When I turn it on it just hums loudly after it warms up. I don't have anything plugged in. None of the pots change the hum. All of the tubes are glowing. Where should I look?

Imho, you should look for a tech. I also suggest that you do not turn the amp back on. The electrolytics are bad and need to be replaced.

The shematic show one side of the heater are at the chassis, this make always a slight hum, new wiring will fix that.
A 3 prong pug is a must, no ground = unsafe and make hum
Amp may need new filter caps as Dean jr write.
Tubes may need to be change too. Unbalanced output tube = hum.

Best is to see a qualified tech
