Mystery Celestion

That elusive piece of the overall equation, so many options and so little time to test them all — Celestion, Fane, Eminence, Jensen, JbL, Utah, Ceramic, Alnico, 1x12, 2x12, 4x12, 2x10, 4x10, 1x15, 2x15, 4x15, 1x18 and I'm sure there are even more!

This was lying around the house, dead, for 20 years

I had it reconed to 8 ohms as it seemed most likely I'd use it in a small American amp. The tech said it was a very old Celestion, low power, with a smaller than usual voice coil. Maybe 15w or so?

Most likely a P44. Originally a 10W speaker, with the modern voice coil probably good for a few more. I wouldn't push it much past 12W or so.

Thanks - I was going to find one of those little WEM 1x12s and try a Princeton or a Harvard through it. A 5E3 would be a bit much, I guess, although I rarely run mine full out.

I agree. It looks very similar to the Celestion P44 that I have in a Johnson Celestion amplifier. According to the Johnson catalog of the day, the speaker is rated at 10 watts. The speaker was available with either a smooth or ribbed cone at that time..... late 50's to early 60's.
