why use new production 12at7/ecc81 when superior NOS is only @$20 ?---- i have used JJ ecc81's in 120 Mk4 PI's and they seem ok to me--- here's one tube vendor's price breakdown--http://store.tubedepot.com/12at7.html---- real NOS Mullard ecc81's for $19.95-- now why was i using those JJ's again ??- -- oh yeah, because i had 'em laying around............gldtp99

i have been looking into that mullard nos, i currently have a groove tubes ecc81 and im not too pleased but it was the only one at my local music shop. i am not too handy when it comes to electronics but i do know what sounds good. i plan on retubeing my head soon and was wondering what type of tubes people here use for their 120's. does anyone use specific tubes for different sockets or do most of you use the same model 12ax7/ecc83 in all 4 preamp sockets? i have heard of many people using assorted tubes for example a telefunken smooth plate in v2 for such and such effect on tone etc... as i said im not very handy with electronics so any of your suggestions would help a bunch

i like RCA 12ax7a's in V1 of 120 Mk4's--- some of my stock 120's tend to picky about preamp tubes (microphonics) so stability is as important as overall tone quality in amps like this---- with stock 120 Mk4's i usually go with a premium tube in V1 (RCA, GE, Sylvania, Brimar, Mullard, etc) and use either EH or JJ in the other preamp positions because i'm not exactly rich and i have lots of amps--- using a premium PI tube is always a good idea------ as far as EL34's go, the word on the Shuguang EL34B is that it's probably as good as you're going to get without spending big $$$ on NOS----- i've got 120's running these as well as Winged C, and Sovtek WXT's----- with the extremely wide range of tone adjustment due to the active preamp, as well as manufacturing variations, it's more difficult to predict what a particular preamp tube, in what position will sound like in 120's than in other types of amps with passive preamps and more standardization in build/components--- i use the "bowl method"--- i have bowls full of good used 12ax7's and try many tubes until i find the combination that works well for the amps i'm working on---- i also have a decent supply of new prod pre tubes so i don't have to use $40-$100+ 12ax7 pre tubes across the chassis if i don't want to......................gldtp99

i have had good luck with jj's so i think i will get that mullard ecc81 for the pi and use some jj's in the other positions. thanks for the info it cleared up my questions. i guess ill just have to fiddle around with preamp tubes once i accumulate some more of them and mix and match and see what sounds good.
