decided to just have the thing gutted, fixed and modified.

Sorry guys, but not to a Sound City, but a vintage Hiwatt circuit with the proper 6 power tubes.

I could have returned it and moved on, but everything came together and decided to have it done properly.
In the end, I get the amp that I really wanted in the first place.

The 6EL34 Hiwatt used different transformers. Probably still work, but won't do the same thing as a Hiwatt one.

We never got to see the transformers, particularly the OT. Could be anything. I didn't check to see how the preamp compared to the Ceriatone schemo but maybe it did and maybe there was a 100w power amp section but obviously the sound didn't satisfy like a good smoke after a meal does to a nicotine addict .
Maybe something awry in the pre section. Too many unknowns.
Anyway good luck to the op.

He's going to check out the transformers before doing anything.

They appear to be the stock Sound City 120 transformers.
