7199 tube substitution on a Gemini II

Postby sleepingtiger on Wed Sep 13, 2017 7:48 am

When my amp arrived I had to install the tubes & the 7199 cracked as I tried to install it. Due to the high cost & very limited availability of 7199s, I ordered a 6U8-to-7199 adapter & 2 6U8 NOS tubes, one of them "low noise". Can I expect the amp to function correctly? Everywhere I've read that other than needing either an adapter or socket rewiring, a 6U8 functions exactly the same. Anyone have experience with this substitution?

I was just reading this http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/7199-vs-6u8.415908/ in regards to your post. I haven't made any switch yet because I have a few stashed.
I had posted here once about using an adapter and someone chimed in on the topic. Maybe a search will turn it up.

Well, I got the 6U8A tubes & adapter from Tubedepot.com today & it took a while to get it in because I had to do it by feel, as you can't see $hit & I'm too damned stubborn to take the back off to change one tube! I don't have the stock tube to compare it to, BUT it's quiet at idle & it works & sounds just fine! I had to keep the volume down, as the wife was dozing, but I got about 10 minutes with it at low volume & goosed it once & It seems to get pretty loud too, so I declare...success!
I will do some experimentation with 12AX7 substitutions, as I have quite a few NOS & ANOS tubes to try, but that will come later.
Thanks for all your help & I'll keep you posted...

Tony  :jam:

FWIW, I also have a 6GH8 & 6BL8, both of which were recommended & will also work with my adapter, so I'll let you know if the rests result in a change on my part.

I have a 1966 Gemini II and am always interested in keeping it working. The Ampeg is one of my favorite two amps, along with a 1962 Fender Pro. Seriously Great amp for what I play. Thanks John

Well, if you need a 7199 & don't have the dough for NOS, the adapter with a 6U8 works just fine.
