Slapback echo (Like Iommi on "The Warning", Page, etc.)

The greatest names in guitar, the sounds that we all want and have chased for years. This is the central location for decoding the elusive signature sounds.

Slapback echo (Like Iommi on "The Warning", Page, etc.)

I was listening to the first Sabbath album today, and I noticed this great slapback sound Iommi gets when he's soloing around the 6:30 mark on "The Warning". Also similar to some of the slapback that Page used to get in studio, and live.

Is there a pedal that does this pretty well? It seems there's like a single repeat, then a reverberation or echo or something.

I'd say the soloing around the 6:30 mark is simply slapback delay (around 30-40 mill). The right side is completely dry while the left side is the delay (no dry signal). You can accomplish this easily with a two amp setup and any pedal delay unit. There is a section around the seven minute mark which does use reverb, but I don't hear it in the part you mentioned.

What would a good pedal be to replicate this? Possible with a single amp rig?

I honestly haven't had any experience with delay pedals.

Any decent analog delay pedal will do

I use the Roland RE-20 for slapback. It's on nearly all the time. Very short delay that is barely perceptable, but you'd know if it was missing.

Page still uses an Echoplex EP-3.
