Bon Jovi

The common reason to tune down is for the singer

as far as string tension goes ( referred to above) select the strings which give the best feel for that tuning...I would suggest that dropping down 10~52 or 11's may be the ticket if you are used to 10's at standard tuning.

I commonly use strings 1 "grade" heavier on a Gibson- so 10's on a Strat ( 25.5), 11's on a shorter scale ( 24.75) Gibson this gives a more predicable feel...it's not just bending but also 'rebound' if playing fast single note passages

D'Addario strings has a chart somewhere on the website which gives tension for tunings/scale lengths for each of their strings.

Surprised no one mentioned Stevie Ray Vaughn. He was famous for tuning down a half step.

Er, um,.......

spacetrucker wrote:^Atleast you don't tune to drop G. I don't know how that could sound good, but apparently people do it.

I stick with C or B sometimes A But mostly C.

For the record, Jimi Hendricks and SRV played in Eb tuning for a while.

I was a little surprised when I was figuring out a tune that AC DC also uses E flat. Kiss does, too.

...........also Zeppelin at the O2 reunion gig tuned down a tone to D for some of the songs (probably to make it easier for Robert Plant to hit the high notes)

Wow! I had NO IDEA there were so many that used drop tunings. I'm really surprised! Seems like it would be more appropriate to ask who doesn't....

You guys got it easy, I play bass in a band and we tune down to an A# for recording live to a drop C.... simply because the speakers would just sound like dogs barking at a loud stage volume... which if half the crowds drunk can be fun!

back "in the day" some guitarists would tune down a whole step to make it easier on the keyboardist.
some keys are just easier to play on organ or piano and some keys are easier on guitar...nice when those are the same.
Some metal bands tune down for a darker more menacing tone.
I tune to A440, but if i had the gear to do it would keep a guitar tuned down for some things and maybe one or two set up in open tunings for slide.

Yeah, lots of major acts play live tuned down, because it is easier on the long haul, but the studio albums are usually either recorded @A440 or are modulated up to that electronically or by speeding up the tape.

Either way, play what is right for YOU and do not play a certain way just because some other guy did it that way and it worked for him.
