What did the 1970-1974 Orange amps sound like?

I owned a tiny terror (not bad- just didn't have enough thickness.) An OR50 sounded like a fuzz box with master below 3/4 to full. I always want to like Orange and picture them as sounding like a fatter and softer (top end) then a super bass- so what did legit Pix Only amps or similar sound like? Who definitely used them, and on what? Who makes a decent clone- does a modern Orange come close- CS or Retro 50?

I'm about to give up and try the Micro Dark I tried the other day because it sounds a lot like the OR50 I had for 1/7th the price!?!

Listen to some vintage Wishbone Ash of the era. Particularly" Live Dates"....that'll give you a good idea. One side of that early live album ('73 iirc) was Andy Powell on his late sixties Flying V and the other was Ted Turner on an old maple neck Strat (usually-I believe he may also have occasionally employed a Firebird). Great guitar (and bass) tones-primarilly supplied by Oranges and Matamps (and Ormats  ). Martin Turner, the bassist used a Thunderbird into a big Orange rig- for an awesome sound.(all imho, of course). There was the odd Hiwatt seen on stage, and in the early days I think also an Acoustic 371 S/S bass rig sometimes snuck in, but I'd say at least 90% (likely more in reality) was good old Orange tone. Really, any old WA album will give you lots of great tones -("Argus" from 1972 was very popular in the day).

I agree.
I have a Plexi front ORS 100 half stack.

I saw Wishbone Ash live promoting Argus back in the day.
It was outstanding.
I got a 70s era OR 80 head and 4/12 cab but sold it in 2001.
I came across the ORS100 half stack here in the States 3 years ago.
It has the sideways transformer like some early Marshall amps.
If you crank it you can get Andy Powell and Ted Turner tones.
I have a DVD of Free live on German TV with an Orange backline.
Their usual amps were Marshall but they did well with the Orange stuff.
My age prohibits taking it out to play.
For that I use a Budda TwinMaster into the normal channel with a Earthquaker Devices Monarch to emulate the old Orange tones.
It does not compare with feeling the 4/12 roar but does a fair job of catching the tone.

When you crank one of those things it's more about what it feels like, not what it sounds like. :not_worthy:
