Finally got an Orange/Matamp 200

Postby bitbrain2101 on Thu Feb 09, 2012 1:32 pm

Hi guys,

I have bought an Orange/Matamp 200 yesterday with serial OR168 at the power chassis, but no other handwritten numbers or dates on the chassis, it does not have a name plate at the wooden back, but Partridge labels at the 2 big transformers. It was offered via former "Kijij", now Ebay small auctions = no bidding, direct contact to the seller, for EUR 800. The overall condition is good, but somebody replaced the KT88´s with EL34´s. The seller told me, he did not need the 200 watts and the KT88´s were to expensive, but he thinks that he still has the "old" tubes, I will know by tomorrow. Unfortunately one power tube socket and some other components have been replaced in an unprofessional manner. The grid resistor at the replaced socket has 56k insted of 5.6k, the coupling cap has 0.056 instead of 0.047. I suspect that the old coupling cap or socket were burned because of a large black spot at the chassis. The original 0.047 coupling caps are made by RS and are colored gray, how reliable are these ? What makes headache to me is a replaced hi watt resistor in the DC supply line, because in the only (hand drawn) schematic I found the exact value is missing and I don´t understand the power supply circuit. Why is the choke placed right behind the rectifiers ? That´s not common, normally the choke is placed after the reservoir capacitor. There are 2 hi watt resistors at the solder terminal, one is 8,2k and the other one is the one with missing value. In the schematic this is the resistor between DC supply point A and point B. Any ideas ? I am thinking of replacing all power tube sockets, grid and screen resistors and coupling C´s for the power tubes and all small electroytic caps.

First, congratulations on finding and securing one of these fine machines.

Second, the scribbly hand drawn schematic has known errors, so be aware the real amp might not match the schematic exactly.

As for this mystery resistor, I've been meaning to open mine up, so when I do, I'll try to fill in the blanks and hopefully we can get you the resistor value you need.

Please take (and post) pictures as you look through your amp.

These 2 rectangular cement resistors 5.6k and 2.7k are the replacement for the resistor with unknown value. More pictures on the way

The one I've got here only has one resistor on that tag strip - 8K2 5W. It may be a slightly different layout, I can't see what's going on with yours.

Oh good, I was hoping Alnico still had that OR200 on his bench.

Here's that tag strip in this one, s/n 368.

I've drawn out the schematic for this one and it's almost the same as the hand drawn one posted a while back. There are a few differences - I'll get something uploaded soon.

That would make a fine addition to the Orange Amps Field Guide. 8)

@Gladmarr,

thanks for yor kind reply. I hope the pictures are good enough. There is one missing value in the hand drawn schematic that can be filled, the capacitor which is in parallel to the choke is a 0,01µF. Today I measured one of the 270 ohm screen resistors with 196 ohm.

@Alnico,

thanks for taking photos, great help. I think there are 2 different layouts for this amp. Yours has 2 capacitors with red insulated (shrink tube) resistors parallel to them, mine has only one of each. The 8.2k/5watt is under these 2 replaced resistors at the tag strip. Is your amp a slave amp or lead amp ? Mine is a lead amp.

I have found a photo of a slave amp that has the same layout as mine. I hope it is not forbidden to post photos with links to other sites. Otherwise please delete this post.
