Nothing fancy but my TEAC X-300R can fast forward and rewind (under some tension) but the gears change and freeze when I hit play! Help please!

Not very familiar with Teac's (A sony/pioneer and revox man myself) but common faults with old tape decks are belts (though I should imagine yours is a direct drive) and capstans going sticky over the years. Would be worth doing a partial disassembly and see if any of the rubber idlers have turned gooey.
Also motor start capacitors may have failed etc.

These freezing faults can also be caused by tape shedding oxides (going sticky). Is the tape path over the heads clean and clear?
Git orffff moi lannnddddd!!
