"dummy" coil---how does this work?

Featured in Alembic basses and guitars in the '70s, it seems like no one uses this today. I'm not really sure how this is wired. As I remember, it's laid out so that you could have two single coil pickups with the 'dummy'(rwrp)in the circuitry in the middle, resulting in humbucking but retaining a pure single coil sound from either neck or bridge. The dummy would not feed into the audio output, sort of like a Strat set up with a 'phantom' middle pickup. Is the dummy coil constructed in a different manner than a regular pick up, so that it doesn't interfere with the sound/pickup pattern of the other two? Any drawbacks to this set-up?
