Removing tremolo back plate.

I've noticed more and more botique guitars being built without a tremolo back plate (with the springs exposed). What's the theory behind this?

Easy. Real men never use a backplate!

Seriously, though, it's a whole lot easier to restring and to tweak the trem tension without a backplate getting in the way. Sooner or later, most of us end up taking them off to get at the guts of the trem and once it's off, it just seems a waste of time putting it back on.

That's my excuse anyway... and of course, Strats just look SO much cooler - and the finish wears in a much cooler way - with the plate off!

Hendrix did it, that's good enough for me! Really though it's a convient factor, I do most of my own setup work.
