Gotta figure out which Bridge Humbucker I want

Postby Noel on Mon Mar 02, 2009 6:02 pm

Hey folks:
As my earlier post indicates I have a Carvin CS6C inbound. May or may not like the M22T I ordered for the bridge.
I like a med-high output humbucker that gives good harmonics and a fairly wide midrange.
Main guitar has a Custom Custom. It's Japanese med wt Ash with a Floyd.
This guitar will be kinda Les Paul-like, but slightly brighter (25" scale, a tad more Maple, and a FLoyd).
Considering:
Another Custom Custom
WCR Godwood (WOW!! But big money)
WCR Fillmore (Love those sound clips!)
Seymour P-Rail (Nice veritilty. I like its Humbucker sound)
Rio BBQ Bucker

Or, ????? Any recommendations?
Duncan 59s, Burstbuckers, etc. are too bright for my taste. And I like more ooomph...

BTW, have a brand-new, never installed Dimarzio Mo' Joe. I'll take $50 for it if interested. I realize it's also not right for me.

I tried a P-Rail recently on a custom-built Tele style guitar at a local boutique repair shop. Sounded really good. As a humbucker, it had a lot of low-mids. The P90 sound was pretty cool. Not something I would use a lot, but cool change-of-pace.

Nice thing about this Carvin is it comes with push-pulls on the tone knob. So, the P-Rail would be easy. Whatever I put in there will be able to be split.

Check out Motor City pickups. Parkhead loves them, and he's a PAF guy. There are some threads about them in the Signature Tones section here.

Last Friday I called Lindy Fralin, and lo and behold, the man himself gets on the phone. We talked about a few options and ideas; what I play like, etc.
I think I've pretty much settled on one of his high output humbuckers. AlNiCo IV with 43G wire at 13.5K.
I've always used medium-high output pickups. I think because I don't use a pick I tend to like the slightly higher output like the Custom Custom. Seems to even out my attack without using a compressor. Not silly Super Distortion/Invader territory or anything, just a 'hot-rodded PAF' kinda tone.
His AlNiCo IV pickups sound like the right idea after talking to him. Hey, $120. Not bad at all. And he does F-spacing too.
Good guy to talk to; he really knows his stuff.
