Chambered Les Pauls: When ?

Postby MacG on Wed Jan 14, 2009 6:13 am

Hi All:

When did Gibson start chambering Les Pauls ? The regular Standards got chambers few years back, and there was a chambered Les Paul.."Supreme..?" a while back, but did they do anything like that in the ´80´s ?

TIA.

I toured Gibson in 1990.
At that time I saw Les Paul bodies which had 7 X 1" diameter holes drilled into the mahogany in order to lighten the guitar.

They were also trying stuff like balsa wood bodies.

I think that both of the approaches were "experiments".

I do have a 1982 Leo's ( early 59 reissue) I have xrayed the guitar and I know that there are no "chambers".

Recently one of those "how it's made" type shows went to Gibson and briefly showed body blanks with rather large channels & chamers cut out of them. Thanks to tivo I was able to freeze and have a goodish look...probably 20 to 25% of the mahogany is gone.

That's a cool photo..I know that what i saw in 1990 used different positioning for the holes...i think 4 at forearm position, an extra near the p/u switch and 2 on the horn.

When I was working at Guitar Center the Gibson rep told me they had been drilling weight relief holes into Les Pauls since at least 1985, but no one ever complained about it until x-ray photos started to show up on the internet.

:D I wouldn't worry about it, after all they're just Gibsons...

I own a 89 LP Studio I bought new, and it’s a keeper. Although nothing is original on it anymore, not even the fret board. It’s a workhorse. 8)

Although I really don't see the point of weight relief holes. If a guy can't pick up a 12 pound guitar and sling it around his shoulder, he should probably consider a workout program.
