Opinions on Hi-tone 4122 4x12

Postby sound city 69 on Fri Nov 11, 2016 8:33 pm

I'm looking for a cab for my 1973 DR103. I've found a Hi-tone 4122 4x12 for sale locally and am considering buying it.
It appears to be in excellent condition. The asking price is $800 which seems a bit high. Is that a fair price?
The Hi-tone site shows only a picture of the front and limited details. Quality? Speakers?

Would I be better off to wait and find a vintage Hiwatt cab?

What would the construction style (front or rear loaded) and grill cloth have been for a Hiwatt cab in 1973? I've seen them with salt and pepper as well as black grill cloth.

That is a steal.
The HI-TONE cabs are built with the same exact materials as early 1970's HIWATTs, but the build quality is infinitely superior.
The originals used rabbit joined corners which get loose, weak and wobbly when bumped and battered.
HI-TONE cabs use finger joined corners with are much stronger and more durable.

the back panel attaches to the cab with stainless steel screws that thread into metal inserts in the batten boards.

Here is the inside of that cab. Four DR-F2 drivers. These sit squarely between the Fane 122142 and 122231. Tight bass and singing highs with big fat mids. The original DR-F is arguably the ultimate HIWATT/HI-TONE speaker, but the F2 was so cool we made some available.

I can confirm everything Callaway_1 posted in his response. The construction of HI-TONE cabs is first rate and the speakers are the closest things to vintage HIWATT Fanes available - with the added bonus of being more reliable / road-worthy.

If I might humbly suggest you could ad much more info and more pictures to the Hi-tone 4122 web page, just my two cents.
With such high quality why not describe it in detail an show pictures from all sides as well as inside?

I had a photographer come in last spring to take photos for the new website. We simply ran out of time that day.
I am working up a list of photos needed for another session.

Thanks!

I did originally, but am no longer part of the operation. Having disclosed that in so many posts here, I didn't think to mention it in my response to you.

Apologies if my recommendation sounded like a sales pitch, but I stand by my comments nevertheless :) .

No apology necessary, I value all of the opinions shared here whether affiliated or not.
I didn't mean for it to sound like I had a problem, I just wanted to point out that the Hi-tone website
should have more information. Most advertising is overinflated with meaningless information and
here is a case where there are true benefits that need to be mentioned.

I have a HI-TONE 4X12 and it's an incredible cabinet,,, handles my '75 DR201(KT-88s !!) with ease .
The cab is a friggin' tank -- completely bomb-proof construction, I love it .

Thanks for sharing your opinion, for practical use that sounds like a good choice, I'm always afraid of blowing vintage speakers.

I hear ya. I have Hiwatt cabs with vintage FANES and am more careful with those.

To be clear: mine has the original DR-F speakers and not the DR-F2's that Callway_1 mentions here,, which
I'd also like to try in the future .

Hope you get that cab, that's a great price.
