Powering a speaker with an amp rated lower than the speaker?

Postby BBlack on Tue Oct 06, 2009 12:20 am

Is it ok to power a 250 watt rated speaker with a 100 watt amp?

Thanks

As long as it's a speaker designed for use with an electric bass and the impedances are matched, sure.

Just keep in mind that badly distorted signal from pushing an amp... and no I'm saying you do this... can fry a speaker just as too much clean signal can.

A clipped signal's waveform (almost square wave) is hard for a speaker to mimic, and a voice coil that doesn't move in and out heats up and... ouch.

For what it's worth!

I meant to say "and no I'm NOT saying you do this."

If you're not striving for heavily power-section distorted bass then don't worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about it anyway since I run vintage tube heads at gigs 2-3 times a week through several types of overrated cabs.

Speaker wattage handling should be at least 20% greater than amp output in order to cope with transient peaks.

Speaker efficiency is the big issue for volume.

Ohmage matching is important - never run an amp with a speaker load lower than the amp setting.
Best way to take out a valve amp transformer....
Shut that thing off and get to bed!
