KT88's or 6550's For Bass

Postby Serafinosteve on Fri Jun 16, 2006 4:05 pm

I recently bought a sound City Bass 150 and the owner before me had Groove Tube 6550's and he told me 6550's sound better. If i want to use this amp for bass witch tube would be the best sounding and would the 6550's give me less power?

6550's are a little less powerful but have a slightly sharper edge (in my limited experience). some 6550/88's are the same except for the glass.
I think the brand you use will make more difference than the model.

Lots of those guy's used the 6550 because KT88's have been hard to find until lately. The kt88 is a far better sounding tube.

I would say you should go with the KT88s. I agree that they sound better than the 6550s (which are great tubes in their own right) for bass, or at least in the vintage British tube heads that I use (Hiwatts and Sound Citys) they sound better!

If it's a Sound City, use KT88s.

That's the sound
