Fender's S1 system

What is the deal with the S1 system (the pickup tap) that Fender is putting in some of its basses?

I know how it works, and the difference in sound it will create on a guitar. But is it that crucial in a bass? Does it work that well in a bass?

Crucial? Depends on your needs. I am seriously considering removing all but the volume control from my Ric, just running straight from p'up to amp. I have one tone I want. I can hear it plain as day in my head, and occasionally hear it from my amp. For me, no, it wouldn't be crucial.

But for a modern cover-band bass player trying to do Lenny Kravitz, No Doubt and Nickleback in the same set, it might be a useful asset.

I wanna know what a single-p'up guitar needs with a switch of any kind.
