Quite Hotrail: help needed

Postby squibble on Thu Aug 04, 2005 10:51 am

My Strat was fitted with a Hotrail as a replacement bridge pup when I bought it, all was well until last night, It has gone very quite, I have taken the pick guard off to look for anything obvious but all appears to be ok. What do I test for and how do I test it???

Check it for open (infinite) ohms with your handy dandy vom. You'll have to isolate the leads to check it out of circuit. I'd bet your problem is in the switch rather than the pickup. Any previous symptoms; cutting out when switching?

No, no problems at all, the switch seems to work ok in the other 4 positions just seems to be the bridge only position thats affected, I will chek out the pup as you say, I assume that ther should be a resistance through the coils, by this question you will have realised I'm no techy!!

Any sound at all or is it dead?
My strat also had a hot rail in it and one of the rails went bad so it became a single coil again.
there should be 4 wires plus a shield or ground, 2 wires for one coil, 2 wires for the other. you should have a resistance measurement of about 4-7k ohms between each of the coils

I would guess bad switch first, my Epi Les Paul has been doing something similiar to that lately, just to lazy to change it right now. a couple of firm toggles back and forth and it fixes itself.
