HELP w/ Floyd please...

Postby Marshall Maniac on Fri Nov 22, 2002 5:05 pm

I picked up a cheap guitar w/ a Floyd Rose, and everything is great except for one thing: I can't get the bar to stay in one spot. It wants to hang down and swing freely (make up your own joke for that one).

I can find nothing on the 'net about this, and Ritchie Fleiuauuoiegor's book says that the screw in the back controls tention but it doesn't seem to work like that for me.

I've never owned or played a floyd-equipped axe before, so I'm a newbie a this. Is there a way to get it to stay where I want it?

TIA!

I had an 'original' Floyd Rose on my ol' Kramer Baretta that I purchased way back in 1988 or so.

It came with a small open-end wrench which you would use on the nut (where the wang bar goes into the unit) to tighten/loosen the 'play'. On the nut there were two flat surfaces directly opposite each other; this is where the wrench made contact.

Yours may be a different design Floyd though...

The only other advice I can offer is that if it wants to 'hang down and swing freely' - perhaps a Viagra prescription will do the trick. :D

The easy fix IMO is to get the Schaller replacement arm. It is not nearly as much of a PITA as the original style. I think Stew Mac has them HERE. The Schaller is adjustable with your fingers. It is a direct replacement.

Bruce, if 'ya wanna do the Brad Gillis thang - the best is the old style with the arm that is 'permanent' - like Strato describes. But if it's gonna go into a case with little clearance than the screw on bushing type of arm is the way to go. (You don't want to have someone put the guitar in the case with the arm pointing down and then the top of the case tunes your guitar to about A490!) The best of both worlds is a looser but not swinging arm so you can push it out of the way.

You are probably missing the Delrin washers that provide tension and allow the arm to be moved. I've found suitable replacement washers at Grand Auto.

Oh, so *that's* why he went out and got a guitar with a Floyd - the 'Brad Gillis thang'!

I knew I shouldn't have given out any advice!

(waiting with plugged ears for the sickening wail of the 5th fret harmonic being tortured with wang bar a la Brad Gillis to pass by...)

:D
