RIP Herb Brooks

Postby TOMSCHMITT on Mon Aug 11, 2003 9:55 pm

Minnesota and National Hockey legend was killed in a single car rollover today at the age of 66.

As many of you hockey fans out there remember, Herb coached the "miracle on ice" olympic team of 1980 that beat the USSR all stars en route to the gold medal.

It is truly a very sad day here in Minni, and what compounds the sadness for me is I drove past the accident scene on the way home from work, oblivious to the fact that it was him involved.

In addition to his gold medal achievement, he coached 3 Minnesota college teams to national championships.

He was returning from a weekend event at the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Northern Mn. :(

I'm not really a hockey fan, but I'm a big US fan. I remember watching those Olympic games ... what a wonderful accomplishment that was. It was one of those events that really transcended the actual sport involved. Sorry to hear about this, for sure. :(

:( :( Very sad, I remember those games very well.
College kids against the Red Army, they thought they could walk through those games and Herb showed them.
Those players hated him till they figured out what he had done.

Sticks high!

Nate,

It's interesting on the matter of his players hating him. He actually planned that. He had players from all over the country, particularly from the east coast and the midwest, and he unified those players by common dislike for him.

A typical comment to those players back then would be; "you're playing worse everyday and right now you're playing like it's the middle of next week". The strategy worked and the rest is history.

Went by the scene again on the way to my brother's and there's jerseys and flowers laid out in dedication.

There was a documentuary of that and I remember him screaming that on the ice.
