Need a good 6550A...

How can you get a great tone without a good understanding of what makes your amp tick? — EL34, EL84, 6L6, KT66, KT88, 12AX7, 12AT7, 12AU7, EF86, Output Transformers, Power Transformers, Capacitors, Resistors and everything else that it takes to make a tube amp sing!

Need a good 6550A...

Just recently discovered my bud's '76 50w Marshall (modded to MV) is equipped w/ Grroove Tube 6550A (gt rating:H8). Appears to have left the factory this way as it has the OT stickered for 6550's. Have been searching for a close replacement for these tubes, as he is very pleased with his sound. What currently available tube would be suitable?...And WHERE can I get a set??
Thx!
p.s. Have read the earlier post regarding 6550's. $$ is a factor, so we aren't really interested in any NOS Tung-Sols unless the price was very affordable. Has anyone tried the ValveArts 6550's???

Check in with Lord Valve for an opinion on what tube is good. I'd stay away from anything Chinese.
Jeff S

Thanks for the tip, Jeff. Already figured to stay away from "anything Chinese" in general, BUT(!), was asking about the ValveArts because I've read that their KT66 copies are the tube for using in the r.i. BluesBreakers amps. So, I thought the VA 6550's ~might~ be good as well...?
BTW, have an email in to Lord Valve already, but no reply thus far.

The Groove tube 6550As are actually GEs. They do not cost as much as Tungsols. I have some NOS GEs, send me some email.

I've got a quad of GE 6550A's that I could part with. They only had about 20 hours of use in my Marshall Major until I replaced them with KT88's. Two of them are relabeled Groove Tubes, but they're the same as the GE's. I'll sell them for $60 a pair. Email me if you're interested.
Gooch@ivwnet.com
