I'm not willing to spend $500 for a pair of used ones. Any experience with modern productions? The GL seems like it's a rebranded EH. I've read somewhere the Penta KT88SC are the best ( Chinese , selected). Would appreciate some opinions.

I recently bought a pair of JJs (from Watford Valves), just before this MEF thread started http://music-electronics-forum.com/t38527/
The JJs seem robust but their power output is a bit lower than expected (compared to old GEC), tone brighter / less solid, max unclipped sine wave doesn't look very linear.
From the thread, I may look to Ruby or Gold Lion next time.
