pre 74 Celestion cone questions

That elusive piece of the overall equation, so many options and so little time to test them all — Celestion, Fane, Eminence, Jensen, JbL, Utah, Ceramic, Alnico, 1x12, 2x12, 4x12, 2x10, 4x10, 1x15, 2x15, 4x15, 1x18 and I'm sure there are even more!

pre 74 Celestion cone questions

I have a speaker cone question for the experts here. I am pretty familiar with the older pre-rola type speakers. My question is upon looking and an original 1973 G12M I have with no cone code, and a 1974 cream back with the RIC code and a 1969 T1511 014 code....the cones look identical, even the doping. What is different about them? What makes the 003 Lead and 014 cones "better" Since they look identical would the ingredients for the cone material be different? Maybe a different voice coil? My 74 Cream back has the diagonal slit in the voice coil just like the earlier 69-70 Celestions. I'd like to find this info out for I have a 1968 and a 1970 cabinet to fill with pre-rola speakers for I only have one now....and I like to bargain shop. Thanks Mark

they are cones from different manufacturers. 003 and 014 are pulsonic, RIC cones were supposedly made in house at celestion. not all celestion cones have stamps on them. the voice coils are probably the same, but the paper pulp is definitely different between cone manufacturers.

the 014 cones have thicker doping and a different spider to the 003 cones too i think. the constructional difference might not be visible to the naked eye but it is there. use your ears, not your eyes.

The RIC cones are supreme tonemakers. I favor my set more than the 03 or 014's ! It sits right in between giving the fatness and spread of the 014 bass cone but the overall eq of the lead cone. Unreal tone and one to put the mic on for me....Any sound reports from you and how it compares to your other old pulsonics????
