What's a good all round speaker

That elusive piece of the overall equation, so many options and so little time to test them all — Celestion, Fane, Eminence, Jensen, JbL, Utah, Ceramic, Alnico, 1x12, 2x12, 4x12, 2x10, 4x10, 1x15, 2x15, 4x15, 1x18 and I'm sure there are even more!

What quad of speakers will work well in a 4x12 to use with both my Marshall Superbass and as an extension for my Silver Face Fender Pro Reverb?

Maybe a Vintage 30, or are they pretty bright?

What types of music do you play?

Tons of manufacturers use V30's, for whatever that's worth. Some of the OEM models have the bass (444) cones, though, so their sound may not be representative.

Whatever you pick, they've got to be well broken in before coming into full song. Fresh speakers will be bright, regardless.

Aren't most speakers all round? :)

Fender amps seem to sound best with the speakers they came with, often called 'Special Design'. First there were Jensens, then CTS, now they seem to be using RIs, and V30s. :|

I might be going out on a limb here, Warehouse 65 watters (value) might work, or there might be some new type of Eminence speaker that might do the job.

The ability to play/make music is a gift that not everyone gets. Those of us who have it should use it.

WGS Reaper 30 is a nice sounding, affordable, US-made option that comes to mind as a solid "all-rounder". It's Warehouse's version of Celestion's venerable G12H30 and sounds good clean and driven, open and closed-back, and through a wide variety of amp circuits.
I lika do da cha cha.

I consider WGS ET-65 as an all round speaker. It's advertised as doing Country, Rock and Blues.

It's very crafty and reliable. No suprises. No woofies, fuzzies or middies. Just good overall in yer face GREAT tone.

I agree it depends largely on your point of reference and the amp it is used with. The reason I'm into Fanes is that they could be likened as the perfect blend of Jensens, Celestions and EV/ JBL (depending on model) in that they're defined and clear enough for cleans yet take distortion very well. If there's any off-trade I can see what would be that some grit comes off a bit clinically for my sensitive ears.

But then which of them would be more versatile and chameleon like than the rest...? Probably the Medusa 150C.
