Gibson GA-90

Postby gtomax on Mon Apr 24, 2017 11:38 pm

Hi, I'm picking up a 1958 Gibson GA-90. It's the weird 6x8" configuration and they only made 50 of them in '58. Anyone have one of these and how do you like it for blues? It's got 5879 preamp tubes same as the GA-40, a 12AU7 for 2nd gain stage which I plan on replacing with an AY if it needs it, then we're on to 6SN7 phase inverters and 2x6L6/5881 tubes.

Bill Black used it as a bass amp in Elvis's band and it's a clean/"hi fidelity" design so stays cleaner than the GA-40 longer in stock configuration.

Very interested to hear the 6x8's push air, should be very defined t-bone walker ish I'm guessing?

rare amp...I have never played through one. Must resist envy!! I have owned a similarly rare 1960 GA-100 Bass amp....very much a high fidelity amp. It was the best electric/acoustic instrument amp I have ever heard.
