Pls check the originality of this Laney Supergroup

Postby Progrocker111 on Fri Sep 16, 2016 3:45 am

Hi folks.

My bandmate is considering to buy this one nice Laney Supergroup. It is the 60w version, made in 1969. Here are some photos, pls check them and let me know, if the amp is in original condition (except power socket or something done with fuse).

Many thanks :)

Looks OK from what I can see. Definitely not from 1969 though. It's very late '71 - early '72.

Looks good at a quick glance. They usually have very high B+ and are very hard on output tubes. You need the best glass in there you can get. Make sure to bias right!

These are very good amps, very under-rated (and under priced) when compared with the Marshalls that they are modelled on with better transformers.
Values seem to be creeping up slowly.
Yes plate voltage is typically around 600v so robust EL34s are needed. Also need to check the octal sockets for arcing and usually worth increasing the screen resistors from 470R to 1k.
This one does not appear to have been hacked around (the IEC plug is necessary for an amp likely to be heavily gigged, not sure why it has a fuse cover, maybe it is a safety thing to cover up the voltage selector (well worth double checking that it is correctly set for your local voltages.
All bleeding stops.......eventually.

In Slovakia, I assume you have 240V mains? Run it on the 250V tap and it will help a great deal with the high voltage. Here in the States, if I plug directly into my wall outlet, I get about 7V on the heaters and 660V B+.
