6V6 in Laney Supergroup 60

Postby tubesurfer6 on Fri Feb 26, 2016 11:13 pm

I have a pair of 'good' JJ 6V6s lying around and a very LOUD and clean sounding Laney Supergroup 60. Has anyone tried 6V6s in this amp? I think I read somewhere that the JJ 6V6s are very rugged but I also read that the SGs are hard on tubes.

Very tempting ...

A pair of 6V6s will use a different primary impedance of the output transformer then a pair of EL-34´s.

Can it be done,by for instance tossing around as far as output impedance? Sure. Worth it? I doubt it.

IMO a better proposition would be to install a PPIMV:

It is not the output tubes make power, the just bring power to output transformer.

Output power is given by all the circuits before output tubes. If this power feed 6V6 they may burn without the right bias.
Is this amp can bring the right bias ?

A overpower amp for your need can't be modified easily (except by a tech ) . The easiest way is to use a good power attenuator or replace 12XX7 tubes by lower gain tubes ( 12AT7, 12AY7 ) . You'll change the tone of the amp

B+ in a Laney 60 is near 600V. Sounds like you'd be better off with a different amp, rather than trying to make it something it's not.

Plus the screen grid voltage on these is usually 450+. I'm still looking for a modern EL34 that's reliable in mine.

Yeah, no way. Laney 50W Session amp, maybe. 60W Laney, no way.
