Jennings J40 - help!

Postby johnnysixstring on Mon Nov 16, 2015 11:09 pm

Evening folks

I've had a Jennings J40 for about 20 years. Always loved the tones including the bonkers boost settings.

Sadly the thing has been playing up. After not being used for about 6 months I powered it up and it made almighty loud hum. I switched it off then it crackled and popped into silence.

I've had a respectable local amp repairer look at it.They got it going for 20 minutes or so until it started humming and smelling like burning. Now it does nothing when switched on.

The repairer says there could be loads wrong with it and without a schematic it was difficult to work upon.

Has anyone out there had a J40 go down in a similar manner? If so, have you had any success with repair?

Does anyone have a schematic for this amp?

Does it sound like the end of the road for this amp? If so I'll rob the silver celestions for a 2x12 cab and sell the J40 for spares not working.

Hope someone out there has a solution.

Thanks in advance

Never see a Jenning schematic on all my schematic link .

Is it a solid state unit or tube amps ? Look Solid State to me

Yeah it's solid state.

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately it's not a preamp issue, so that fine schematic is of no use.

Any recommendations for really really good solid state repairers in the UK anyone?

I know schematic is not complete but it is all I found . You would be very very lucky if you find schematic .

Is that amp worth to pay for a fix ?

Yes not sure that it's worth spending a whole load of money on.. I'm slightly sentimental about it, but I'm not loaded with cash!

That's a shame that you're so far away from me otherwise I would be able to reverse engineer it, create a schematic of the power amp & fix it for you while I was at it.
Shipping it down south would probably not be a practical consideration
There may be other Engineers closer to you on the site that may be able to help now that we know where you are

Hampshire, near Basingstoke (actually in the middle of the Reading/Basingstoke/Newbury triangle in a village called Tadley)
