JCM 800 tone problem

Postby Kins12355 on Fri Feb 05, 2010 11:28 pm

I have a 2 year old 100 watt reissue JCM 800 1987X head that is way too bright. Even when I dial down the treble and turn up the bass it is still way to bright. No matter what guitar I use (PRS, Les Paul, Strat) the amp tone is like an ice pick in my ears. I know that new tubes with a rebias will help but even when the amp was brand new with factory tubes and bias it was still lacked warmth. Any suggestions how I can tame this trebly beast? Thanks!

Troubleshooting:

1. Speakers?
2. Bias?
3. Clip off the bright cap.

Means nothing.

Lot of different speaker models in a 1960A.

Jump both channels and use the normal side for your volume, use the treble volume for your highs. It's worth a shot.

I found this info very helpful in my quest to remove the ice pickiness out of my 800. Hopefully, it also applies to reissues. I think clipping out the bright caps will help out tremendously in removing the ice pick tones of the amp. Also as previously mentioned, speakers will be the next part of the equation. For the most part 1960A cab a fitted with Celestion G12T-75 speakers. IMO, Greenbacks would be a great upgrade, but there are a plethora of speaker combinations and options.... Weber silver bells, Scumbacks...
