I wouldn't be too shure! I've fried an 8 ohm hotplate 3 times with one of my "100w" amps. Significant for that head is that it is twice as loud as any of the other 100 watters I own... I would never dream of running that amp flat out in a 120w cab, never!

In fact, I wouldn't run any 100w all tube marshall unattenuated through a 120w cab, since most of those amps put out alot more than 100w once you start cranking them.

No you can't...at least not with a healthy 1959. You'd smoke those speakers like a joint in no time. There's a reason you see a lot of those cabs with 1 or 2 replaced speakers, and you've just stated why.

Yeah, that's what I suspected..A healthy 1959 will definitely push more than 100 watts when cranked..As we all know!

Turns out at last minute I decided to not buy that 1959 after all..So no longer an issue anyway..

What if you don't have the MV past 5 on a 2203, could that still run a risk of damage the speakers?

Yep. 2203 is 115w at 4% distortion (clean rating, volume around 3-4), and over 170w at 10% distortion (usually 6-7 or higher).

JCM 800 manual here, your 2203 amp is listed on page 5 of the PDF file (page 7 of the manual): http://southbayampworks.com/marshallman ... 0specs.pdf

What if you were using an attenuator too?

2 clicks down it wouldn't be a problem...-4 or -6 db...-3db with a cranked 100w could be right on the ragged edge.

Personally, I don't like the bass cone versions of these speakers, I can't comment on the 75hz cones.

Those speakes can be problematic if you run a 100watter in 4 of them, if one blows, you would bet your dollar, that one of the others will have a rub in the voice coil, if not all of them.

50 watts all day long, 100 watts of raging tube Marshall is asking for trouble.

I would imagine a JCM 800 would be better with these speakers than with greenbacks. I tried 25 watt cremebacks in an 800 & it sounded aweful.
